General dentistry encompasses all aspects of dentistry. This includes dental procedures such as, examination and diagnosis, cleaning, fillings, root canal treatment, crowns, veneers, extractions, implant restoration, mouthguards, night splints, whitening, preventive maintenance and emergency treatment.
As general dentists, we manage your general care as well as coordinate your referrals to specialists where necessary. For example, you expect your GP to look after most of your care, make sure you stay healthy, give you vaccinations and provide care for you when you’re sick. But if you require complex treatment, like heart surgery, you’d want to be referred to a specialist heart surgeon.
This is the same in dentistry. Although we take care of you for the most part, if you have advanced disease or require invasive treatment, we refer you to a specialist so that we can look after your safety and health. A lot of general dentists now offer things like complex orthodontic treatment and implant surgery. And of course, we don’t pretend to be proficient in specialist procedures after a weekend course.
